Sir Frederick William Herschel, (Friedrich Wilhelm Herschel) (1738–1822) was a German-born British astronomer, telescope maker, and composer. He became famous for the first discovery of a planet not visible to the naked eye, the planet Uranus, and two of its major moons (Titania and Oberon), and two moons of Saturn. He was the first person to discover infrared radiation.

Herschel's first profession was composing and performing music, with astronomy being his hobby. He is known for the twenty-four symphonies that he composed. Astronomy was his hobby and passion. He built his own telescopes of superb quality. After becoming known, he earned substantial income by building telescopes for others. Eventually, astronomy and science became his primary work after he was appointed as the King's astronomer by King George the Third, who provided Herschel with a residence, a salary, and funds for construction of great telescopes.

I just received my copy of this book and I am very disappointed that there are NO ILLUSTRATIONS ( just a notation where the plates would be), and neither are there page numbers or Chapter divisions. This is very unhelpful when trying to assign the particular chapters. There is next to no formatting (all print is the same size, including chapter headers), but at least they chose a font that is readable. I am sure the content is the same as the original, but the publisher did not even bother to put its name on the book. I wish I had known; I would have looked for a better copy of this book.

Great Astronomers William Herschel eBook Robert Stawell Ball Reviews

A great read, especially for free.
a very well put together book with outstanding references to the most important people in astronomy up to the time of the book.
Excellent history of astronomy based on the main persons involved. Well written, very good information. A must for astronomy and history lovers.
Great topic and content, LOUSY publication. No page numbers, no headings, titles, no indentation... Like a cheap computer print off wrapped in a thin cardboard jacket...
This is fascinating!!!!
And it is written on a level of interest and high language (like GK Chesterton), which I find stimulating.
The book has many details that get lost over time as we create more history. The book was written 100 years ago & the author knew Lord Ross's. The later chapters only dealt with astronomer rival's from Grennwitch but on the whole a very interesting history of Astronomy from a perspective viewed a long time ago. Sad part was all illustrations are missing from digital version.
This book was written in 1895, the printed edition has 271 pages (and has illustrations, which the e-book doesn't). At the moment of writing the author was Professor of Astronomy and Geometry at the University of Cambridge. In this book the lives of 18 astronomers are discribed, some of them are known to everyone, but some are not so generally known. The book starts with an introduction of a few pages on the history of astronomy.

A list of the astronomers featured in this book

PTOLEMY, COPERNICUS, TYCHO BRAHE, GALILEO, KEPLER, ISAAC NEWTON, FLAMSTEED, HALLEY, BRADLEY, WILLIAM HERSCHEL, LAPLACE, BRINKLEY, JOHN HERSCHEL, THE EARL OF ROSSE, AIRY, HAMILTON, LE VERRIER, ADAMS.

To give an idea of the content and style of writing I copy the first two phrases of the first astronomer featured in this book, Ptolemy

The career of the famous man whose name stands at the head of this
chapter is one of the most remarkable in the history of human
learning. There may have been other discoverers who have done more
for science than ever Ptolemy accomplished, but there never has been
any other discoverer whose authority on the subject of the movements
of the heavenly bodies has held sway over the minds of men for so
long a period as the fourteen centuries during which his opinions
reigned supreme.

I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the history of astronomy or science, and of course to everybody who is interested in any of the astronomers depicted in this book. I did find the manner in which this book was written quite dull and lifeless ('2-stars'), but because of the information it gives (worth '4-stars') I give it a '3-star' review.
